Beaver Creek Rendevous

Location

MT

Notes

The Beaver Creek Rendezvous is a hunt for disabled hunters. Volunteers and guides with the Rendezvous take care of every need of the hunters and one companion. The only thing hunters need is transportation to the hunt and their hunting license, the Beaver Creek Rendezvous crew take care of the rest.

Leonard Livingston

An avid hunter, Leonard Livingston was diagnosed with MS in 1977 and spent several years in a wheelchair. Ten years later, he was invited to participate in an exclusive antelope hunt for the disabled. Every year since then he has volunteered as a guide for Helluva Hunt in Wyoming

Fulfilling a dream. Ever since his experience in 1987 Leonard wanted to start his own deer hunt for the disabled hunter. So in 2001 Leonard along with two close friends Scott Birkenuel and Sam Denney decided to start Beaver Creek Rendezvous in Southeastern Montana. This hunting experience is for those with disability who enjoy the adventures of hunting mule deer, white tail and even Spring turkey

The area, located in Carter County in Southeastern Montana has beautiful natural scenery that includes Carter County Museum, Medicine Rocks State Park, Long Pines and Ekalaka Park.

Capable Partners

Location

MN

Notes

For over 30 years, Capable Partners has been helping people enjoy the outdoors in Minnesota. Physically challenged hunting and physically challenged fishing involves obstacles which we help remove to encourage disabled sportspersons to participate and realize their potential. As disabled anglers and disabled hunters, we advocate for disabled issues with the legislature, Minnesota DNR and US Fish and Wildlife. By working closely with these agencies, we have a variety of hunts where we are the only people who hunt these locations.  The MN DNR and other organizations give us special access to help us be successful hunting.

Accessible hunting and accessible fishing along with other accessible outdoor activities are our focus. If we can get physically challenged sportspersons outdoors enjoying nature we are accomplishing one of our goals.

We lead accessible trips for handicapped hunting and handicapped fishing to enable outdoor adventures with accessible wildlife opportunities. For deer hunts we use wheelchair accessible hunting blinds and accessible stands. These affordable adaptive outdoors activities in Minnesota encourage independence through doing. Recreational therapy is accomplished through wheelchair sports such as disabled archery and trap shooting. We offer events twelve months of the year which is the most of any organization in the US. In August, we host a disabled ATV ride near Lake Mille Lacs.

Many of our outings have no cost and include a lunch making our events affordable to low-income individuals. We do adaptive turkey hunting, adaptive fishing, adaptive waterfowl hunting and adaptive upland bird hunting. In order for many hunters to participate, adaptive hunting equipment such as gun rests, bite triggers, and counter-weighted shotgun booms are used. Adaptive fishing equipment allows members to fish as effectively as they did before injury.

In 2015, almost half of our members were able-bodied, "capable partners". These members participate in outings as volunteers, anglers, and hunters. Capable partners are key to our program and have expressed how fulfilling it can be to assist in Capable Partners' outings. Please get involved.

Catch-A-Dream

Location

MO

Notes

Catch-A-Dream grants once-in-a-lifetime hunting and fishing experiences to children 18 years old or younger who have a life-threatening illness.

Catch-A-Dream’s singular purpose is to provide consumptive use outdoor experiences to fill the “gap” created when the Make-A-Wish Foundation established national policy that precludes granting a child a wish that involves hunting or use of “…firearms, hunting bows, or other hunting or sport-shooting equipment.”

The initial idea for a program that would ultimately be known as Catch-A-Dream was originated by Bruce Brady, of Brookhaven, MS in late 1999 as he faced his own arduous battle with cancer. Taking great comfort in time spent in the outdoors, he drew strength from these experiences, and was able to “recharge his batteries” as he hunted and fished in his last days. Shortly before his death, he shared with family and friends a vision for some type of program that would provide outdoor opportunities to Mississippi youth with life-threatening illnesses who, unfortunately, were no longer served by the world’s largest children’s wish-granting organization. When the Make-A-Wish Foundation established national policy that precludes granting a child a wish that involves hunting or use of  “…firearms, hunting bows, or other hunting or sport-shooting equipment” Bruce and many others who love the outdoors, were disappointed.

Bruce lost his battle with cancer in February 2000, long before the idea was anything more than a simple concept to find a way to somehow provide meaningful outdoor experiences to a handful of Mississippi children who face life-threatening illnesses. But his family and friends were dedicated to creating such a program as a memorial to Bruce that would eternally provide a message of hope at a time when children with life-threatening illnesses need to know that hope does, indeed, exist. In mid-2000, the Catch-A-Dream Program was founded as a unique and unprecedented partnership among the Brady family, the MSU-Extension Service, the Mississippi Wildlife Federation and the Mississippi 4-H Clubs Foundation, which provided Catch-A-Dream its initial 501(c)(3) fiscal home.

The initial vision was, in retrospect, very small in comparison to what Catch-A-Dream would ultimately become, a testimony to the fact that our human visions are ALWAYS far smaller and of lower magnitude that are those of God.  In late 2003, the 4-H Foundation Board recommended that, due to phenomenal growth and national support and involvement, a separate foundation be created into which the program would move from its original incubator home in the 4-H Foundation. The Catch-A-Dream Foundation was incorporated in December 2003 and granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS.

The Catch-A-Dream Foundation exists to provide resources and implementation of the Catch-A-Dream program. Both the Program and the Foundation were based at Mississippi State University from 2003 until December 2012, at which time the long-standing relationship with MSU came to a mutually determined end. At that time all programmatic ties to MSU were terminated.

The Catch-A-Dream Foundation is now based on a 43 acre property 7 miles southwest of Starkville, MS, which serves as its permanent home and headquarters. The Program emanates from that home location, and continues to deliver its singular mission across the US and Canada in the same high integrity fashion for which it has become recognized.

Creating Memories

Location

OR

Notes

Creating Memories for Disabled Children was created for the sole purpose of connecting children with disabilities as well as adults with disabilities to nature and to create memories that will last a lifetime. The founder of our organization, Ken Coreson, has been taking children hunting and fishing all of his adult life. As a pastor of the Nazarene Church he took youth groups and kids Moose, Caribou and Black Bear hunting, fishing on the Kenai River, and to remote lakes for grayling. Since moving to Oregon in 1988, he has continued sharing these adventures with Disabled Children.

Creating Memories for Disabled Children board of directors and volunteers consists of retired Navy personnel, active-duty Military personnel, former big game guides, parents of disabled children, disabled hunters and fishers, hunter safety instructors, and award-winning Trap shooters who are all experienced in hunting, fishing, turkey calling, archery, black powder, rifles, boating, and much more. These amazing hard-working individuals work day in and day out to give people with disabilities memories that will last a lifetime and be passed on from generation to generation.

Creating Memories for Disabled Children offers many outdoor activities for people with disabilities, their families and caregivers including camping, fishing and hunting absolutely free of charge. Our camp is a 97 acre lot of land generously donated to Creating Memories for Disabled Children by the Boy Scouts of America and is located in Joseph, Oregon on Wallowa Lake where we will be able to house people with disabilities, their families and caregivers for a fun relaxing vacation, going fishing on our customized boat and enjoying the outdoors.

Empowered Dream Hunts

Location

WI

Notes

Joe and Laurie Ramsey established Empowered Dream Hunts in 2007. With Joe’s love for the outdoors and hunting, Joe noticed that there was a need to help those with challenges, disabilities, or illness, so that they can have an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors as well.

As a family, the Ramsey’s have worked together in finding hunting recipients, raising funds to cover the costs, and providing a keepsake DVD to the recipient. Joe and Laurie consider the recipients and their families to be a part of the Ramsey family through these wonderful experiences.

Empowered Dream Hunts always promotes family involvement through the entire dream hunt process. The recipient’s family is encouraged to assist in fundraising efforts. They are also invited to come along and experience the hunt with their family member (recipient). Being with family makes the hunting weekend much more memorable and special.

Hunts of Hopes and Dreams

Location

IA

Notes

Hunts of Hopes and Dreams is a non-profit organization* established to benefit those many individuals who love the outdoors but have terminal illnesses or disabilities that prevent them from actively participating in these traditions.

Hunts of Hopes and Dreams will provide these remarkable individuals a unique environment where they can realize their passion. Lodging, meals, hunts, and other recreation are designed to accommodate these challenges and facilitate interaction with the natural world as much as possible.

You and I think nothing of getting up long before dawn, slipping into that ideal position on the game trail, or pitching decoys into that secret backwater as the morning breeze picks up. We take these precious parts of a day outdoors for granted. Unfortunately, many folks cannot share in these experiences that so often are a bigger part of the hunt than the shot itself. Hunts of Hopes and Dreams was established to fulfill the hopes and dreams of individuals with terminal illnesses and disabilities – to make the little things we take for granted while being outdoors a lot easier for them to overcome and to provide an environment designed to accommodate their needs.

Over ten years ago, my entire family was changed when my father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Growing up, my father was always there when I wanted to go hunting or fishing. He spent countless hours outdoors with me and his dedication infected me with a deep enthusiasm for these pursuits and sharing them with others. Since the progression of his MS, my father has been unable to get in the woods like the rest of us. My father’s experience, and its effect on our family and friends, is the inspiration for this organization.

This project is the result of many years of intense thought, planning, coordination, and dedication. Since beginning the project in 1999, my wife has joined the team, bringing her own passion for working with those coping with disabilities. She has worked with numerous individuals with disabilities and shares in the dream to successfully launch this project.

LEEK Hunting and Mountain Preserve

Location

PA

Notes

LEEK Hunting and Mountain Preserve is a completely volunteer-run facility dedicated to offering therapeutic outdoor programs for wounded veterans with all levels of disabilities.

MISSION: Provide a friendly handicap-accessible camp environment and therapeutic outdoor activities like hunting and fishing, LEEK believes in encouraging our wounded heroes to focus on their abilities, without compromising their current physical limitations.

PURPOSE: LEEK believes in providing a safe and friendly environment where wounded U.S. service members can assist each other through the healing process, both mentally and physically. We offer recreational opportunities specifically geared to each wounded veterans’ needs and abilities.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: LEEK Preserve, founded by the Fisher Family, purchased land in scenic Potter County, Pa. specifically to establish LEEK, a charitable, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization, which offers guided hunts, fishing outings and outdoor experiences for wounded veterans.

Since many of the participants in LEEK’s program come to the Preserve directly from medical facilities throughout the U.S. where they have been recovering from serious injuries, the program is designed to provide a therapeutic outdoor experience as the wounded veteran’s introduction back into an accepting and appreciative society.

The experiences at LEEK are an enormous undertaking that require thousands of volunteer hours each year, all provided by the Fisher family and a large network of volunteers, including the gracious communities of Northern Pennsylvania and Western New York.

The volunteers of LEEK, which include dozens of war veterans, believe in giving back to our disabled warriors, to ensure they feel appreciated and honored for their service and sacrifice.

The Fisher’s credit the Preserve’s success to their father, who was a dedicated volunteer and mentor. The Fisher’s remain closely involved in the day-to-day operations at LEEK and hold the mission close to their hearts, having seen firsthand the challenges their own father faced as an amputee.

Outdoors With Friends

Location

AL

Notes

This is a group of Christians who love and appreciates Hunting and Fishing and the experiences God has given them. Sponsored by Southside Baptist Church Brotherhood, we have decided to share our talents and time to provide some of the same experiences with the disabled and disadvantaged people for the Glory of God.

We are including single parent children whom need the influence of Christian men in their lives. In doing this we have also been able to share the gospel with participates as well as volunteers, landowners and curious visitors. We are trying to think outside of the box in ways to bring the Gospel to men, while also providing some Christian recreational fellowship with the less fortunate.

Our Goal is to do this at no charge to the participator, so that they may focus on the Love of the message and to the event. The hunter is paired up with a guide that will do all of the weapon handling up to and after the time of the shot. Deer are dressed for the hunter and they can have the meat, so come prepared with a cooler in case you harvest a deer.

We have taken the wheelchair bound hunter as well as the blind hunting. We have been doing this for several years and are always trying to grow so that we might reach others for Christ.

IA

Notes

Special Youth Challenge (SYC) of Iowa is a 501C3 nonprofit Christian based ministry designed to teach and assist youth with special challenges to participate in and enjoy shooting sports in God’s great outdoors. SYC provides training and other necessary aides to help the hunters achieve this goal at no cost to them. There are three events held each year; a turkey hunt in the spring, a fundraiser in August, and a deer hunt in September.

Our Vision:

Youth with special challenges are often left behind because of their disability. They only hear about the exciting times their friends and families experience while hunting in the outdoors. With training and special equipment SYC helps diminish the handicap by empowering them to succeed. Volunteers instruct the youth, and their family members about ways in which they can hunt safely and use a firearm. Each hunter is given every opportunity to meet the challenge of the hunt and keep the memories of a lifetime.

Our Mission:

To empower physically challenged youth to enjoy hunting and the shooting sports by helping them overcome barriers found in the outdoors. This is done through the use of special methods, equipment, and assistance from volunteers who desire to share their passion for shooting and hunting. Trinity Outdoors Disabled Adventures

LA (501c3 Non Profit) has been formed as an outreach program from Acadiana Amputee Support Group. The vision of our group is to provide enough community involvement to see more people with disabilities “STEP OUT” away from the usual way of life, and “STEP INTO” a new way that can build confidence, provide spiritual uplifting, and have the opportunity to surround themselves with others who are experiencing the same challenges in life. Activities such as tennis, golfing, hunting, fishing, and canoeing, kayaking, camping, hiking, and summer camps has been organized to help bring our members together for memorable spiritual experiences of a lifetime. We have volunteers from many parts of our state of Louisiana that are ready at the drop of dime to lend a helping hand. The majority of these individuals has a child, a relative, a friend, or is disabled themselves. When people ask what ages we cater too; I always answer, “There is no age limit. We can cater from 2 years old to 102 years old.” OUR mission is to give back, share, encourage, and uplift ANYONE who may be dealing with or have dealt with disabilities. OUR TEAM is made up of GOD loving & sincere individuals who have a passion to uplift the principles our TEAM stands for.

Turkey Tracks

Location

IN

Notes

At the very young age of 16, Eric Corey was diagnosed with ALS.  An avid hunter his entire life, we lost Eric to this tragic disease in January, 2012.  Eric’s legacy lives on in his mission.  Turkey Tracks continues to make sure other young adults with mobility challenges like him can experience the joy of hunting.  The event allows hunters with physical challenges to use adaptive equipment and the help of guides to experience a turkey hunt in Northern Indiana, and also now in Tennessee.

What started in 2009 with a couple of kids in Eric’s home, has now become a community wide event.  Volunteer hunt guides, local farmers and supportive friends all have pitched in for a weekend of fellowship, friendship and fun.  In 2013, we had 32 hunters in Starke Co., 11 hunters in Angola, and 9 hunters in Tennessee.

For a time away…Turkey Tracks is about getting families together, away from the doctor appointments and hospital visits that most of these hunters live with on a weekly basis.  It is about enjoyment and love of the outdoors.

Turkey Tracks Hunt has the equipment and the ability to take young hunters in wheelchairs and challenge them to the same adventure that a person with mobility would enjoy experiencing.

United Bowhunters of Pennsylvania

Location

PA

Notes

The United Bowhunters of Pennsylvania's Disabled Hunter Program began in 1999 with an idea from Ernie Kramer. Ernie presented this idea to the UBP leadership and gained approval to move forward. Ernie was encouraged by David Sullivan of Buckmasters Disabled Hunter Services. They agreed to supply a hunt if Ernie could come up with the funds for the transportation to the hunt. The Physically Challenged Bowhunters of America (PCBA) and Buckmasters supplied the applications that first year. Each year the program grew a little and before long, a dedicated committee was formed. The program currently sends at least six disabled hunters on hunts each year. The program is funded primarily from the proceeds from our yearly fund raising banquet. The banquet has become one of the premiere sportsmen events in the area, typically selling out each year at around 300 attendees.

Virginia Wheelin' Sportsmen

Location

VA

Notes

In late 2000, Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF became an official outreach program of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Our mission is to provide all people with disabilities opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. NWTF chapters host Wheelin' Sportsmen events across North America that help participants gain a sense of independence by learning to stay active in the outdoors on their own in between Wheelin' Sportsmen events. Event participants can enjoy activities like hunting, fishing and shooting. In addition to local chapter events, Wheelin' Sportsmen hosts an assortment of other national events.

In 2002, under the guidance of our first volunteer State Coordinator George Homan, the Virginia Wheelin’ Sportsmen(VAWS) program was created. In our first year VAWS hosted two events, and with the help of our local NWTF Chapters and many dedicated volunteers, state agencies, and private landowners, our program has experienced tremendous growth. We are currently holding over 35 events annually for our disabled sportsmen here in Virginia. We work closely with the Va Dept. of Game & Inland Fisheries to provide us with assistance, equipment and resources for our events. Our agency partners currently hosting events are:

Va. Dept. of Conservation & Recreation: Shenandoah River, Lake Anna, and Staunton River State Parks

Va. Dept. of Aging & Rehab. Services: Wilson Workforce and Rehab. Center

Va. Dept. of Forestry: Matthews State Forest, New Kent Forestry Center

VAWS continues to be the largest and most active Wheelin’ Sportsmen program in the country. With roughly 400 members and hosting over 35 events statewide annually, no other state even comes close. While we have worked hard and are proud of our accomplishments, we are not resting on our laurels. We are continually searching for new participants, ranging from youth and adults with physical disabilities, to our wounded veterans returning from service. Our events are open to anyone with a disability and we never charge you to participate. If you have a disability, or have a friend or family member with a disability, and would like to participate in our events, please contact me at the information below. Please help us spread the word of our exciting program. Keep up to date on our Upcoming Events below, and be sure to follow us on Facebook.
